Greetings Disciples and Friends of Clemmons United Methodist Church:

We met our goal and the Sanctuary Renovation Project is moving forward. What a great day of celebration it will be when we can come together as the Body of Christ in the new worship space dedicated to praise and worship!

At this point, we know you have questions about how the renovation project will impact our Sunday morning schedule for worship and spiritual growth. Maybe the best way to lean into this process is to provide answers to the questions we have heard. We will continue to keep you informed through email, letters, newsletters, CUMC website, Facebook and Sunday morning announcements.

As we journey together through this process, please do not hesitate to contact one of the following individuals:

Tara Olson, Lay Leader

t.olson@allpoints.biz

Frank Johnson, Administrative Board Chair

(336) 766-0501

fwjohnson@earthlink.net

Joe Riggsbee, Sanctuary Renovation Team Chair

(336) 778-2908

jariggsbee@earthlink.net

You may also call the church office to speak with a staff person who can help you with questions about youth, children, music, worship schedule, Sunday school, Many Gifts donation for the sanctuary renovation, or any other questions or concerns you may have. (336) 766-6375.

Please mark your calendars for Sunday, December 8 at 5 pm. The Bishop of our Western North Carolina Annual Conference, Larry M. Goodpaster and our District Superintendent, Bill Medlin, will be with us to celebrate a rededication of the sanctuary.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. When will the Sanctuary be closed for renovations?  (How long will the sanctuary be closed for renovations?)

We will officially close the sanctuary on June 9.  (During the renovation, all worship services will be held in the Fellowship Hall located in the Ministry Center 1st floor--current location of the Praise Service).  See Question 2 for more details.)  Use of the sanctuary is blocked off in the church calendar until Thanksgiving. Church Interiors, who will be doing the work, has indicated that it will take between three to three-and-half months to finalize the project. The best case scenario is that we will be back in the sanctuary by mid-October.

2. What will the worship schedule be?   What will happen to the 8:40 & 10:55 services?

The worship schedule will change. The schedule will be as follows:

  • 8:30 Traditional Worship

  • 8:30 Worship Wonders for Pre-school

  • 9:45 Praise Worship

  • 9:45 Sunday School/Discipleship Formation Opportunities adults, children, youth

  • 11:00 Traditional Worship

  • 11:00 Worship Wonders for Pre-school

As a component of worship on June 9th, the two traditional services will start in the sanctuary and then we will process to our new worship space.  For the next three to four months the Fellowship Hall (located underneath the Ministry Center - current location of the Praise Service) will be the home of the traditional worship services.

The order of worship will remain roughly the same as when we worshipped in the Sanctuary. There will be a choir, choir anthem, traditional hymns, etc. Since the preaching pastor will not have to leave the 11:00 service to go to the Praise service, there will be more flexibility in how we plan traditional worship and we will take advantage of this opportunity.

3. Why did the time of the Praise Service change to 9:45am?

All three worship services will need to share the same space in the Fellowship Hall, so the utilization of three sequential worship times was necessary.  In addition, families with young children will now have two styles of worship available to them at an early hour (before nap time!) as well as Discipleship (Sunday School) opportunities for the whole family.

                                           - -more questions on back page- -

4. Will the new worship schedule affect Children’s, Youth, or Adult Sunday school classes currently taught during the 9:50am – 10:50am Sunday School hour?

This is the class schedule planned for June – August for Children and Youth:

Infants – Grade 5:  Current class schedule will remain the same

Grade 6:  Current class schedule will remain the same with the class moving into Middle School SS on June 9

Middle School (Grades 7 & 8):  Current class schedule will remain the same

High School (Grades 9 – 12):  Current class schedule will remain the same

Exciting plans beginning in the fall are in works, but are not yet finalized.  Stayed tuned for these announcements!

It is anticipated that each of the current adult classes will continue to meet.  However, each class is free to make this choice.  Some classes may choose to move their meeting time to 11am. Updates in the class schedule will be published as they are finalized.

5. If my family chooses to attend the Praise Service, will there be other Discipleship Formation opportunities available to us?

Although not yet finalized, new Discipleship opportunities will be offered at 11:00am for children, youth and adults.   As plans for these 11am opportunities are finalized, announcements will be made!  If you are interested in helping with these classes, please contact Gloria Hughes, Kathy Giff or Clark Chilton.

  • A Family Sunday School option for families with elementary-aged children is in the works. Curriculum designed especially for families is currently being evaluated.

  • Plans for additional adult classes are in the works.

  • A One-Room Sunday school class for the children of adults attending an 11am class is being explored.

  • New Covenant Groups have also been requested!

6. What about traffic flow patterns and handicapped parking?

We have a professional engineer who has analyzed the traffic flow patterns for Sunday morning and he believes that the above schedule will work smoothly. We will temporarily move the handicapped parking spaces at the top of the hill to be more convenient to the Fellowship Hall where the three services will take place. We will share more information with you about this at a later date.

 My Big Question

Who am I?  Who is God?  Why is there war?  Is evolution biblical?  How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop?  Throughout the month of April, the teenagers of Clemmons UMC and their friends are encouraged to ask ANY serious question they want at www.clemmonsone.com/question.  All questions are completely anonymous.  The Top 5 questions/themes will be compiled, revealed and answered (to the best of our ability) at the Clemmons:One FUN night on April 28th.

April 2, 2013

Greetings,

I am looking forward to sharing our journey of faith as part of the congregation of Clemmons United Methodist Church in the year ahead. I trust you have found it helpful to have a “connector” to help you get more deeply connected to the life and ministry of CUMC. If you have not yet received a “connector” and are interested in having someone help you get grafted into the life of CUMC, please contact Gloria Hughes at: hughesg@clemmonsumc.org

As a part of that deepening connection, we are offering a 6-week class beginning April 21 focused on our life together as United Methodist Christians.  The 6-week course includes:

  • 2 classes on “The Practical Theology of Mr. Wesley” (including what makes Methodists unique, what we have in common with other denominations, and distinctive features of United Methodist theology and faith)

  • 2 classes on “The Ministry of All Christians”

  • 1 class on how United Methodists (and Clemmons United Methodist Church in particular) organize and operate

  • 1 class on deep discipleship and making covenant vows of prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness

Those exploring becoming a vital part of CUMC are encouraged to take the full course. This 6-week Covenant Partnership Class will be offered four times a year: winter, spring, and twice in the fall. We will meet in room A201 – on the sanctuary level of the Ministry Center down the hall from the Commons Area.

I’m looking forward to having you as part of this Covenant Partner Class, beginning Sunday, April 21. Please RSVP at the church office, 336-766-6375 or by email at equippingoffice@clemmonsumc.org. On Pentecost Sunday, May 19th, we will celebrate brining folks into the life of Clemmons UMC as Covenant Partners. If you and your family are ready to make our church family your home, this would be a perfect opportunity.

Christ’s peace,

Rev. Gloria G. Hughes

 Centenary UMC (Winston-Salem) Presents:

Christ in the Passover presented by Jeremiah Zaretsky (Messianic Jew)

Thursday, March 21 (Auditorium)

12:00-1:00pm – Presentation only (free admission, no food)

6:00-8:00pm – Full Seder Meal ($8.00/person)

“Why is this night unlike all other nights?”

I can promise you that hearing the Last Supper/Seder (Passover Meal) presented this way will completely invigorate your experience of Communion for the rest of your life. I have had these presentations in the last two churches I served and you will be blessed. If you are able to come to the evening meal, this is for all ages and will include the complete experience of the Jewish Seder Passover Celebration – including a mother, father, and child’s responsibility at each table! Learn why Jesus did what he did and said what he said at the Last Supper with his disciples. There is so much symbolism and understanding of Jesus as the Messiah which we typically don’t know when we read the Holy Week Story. If you can’t make the evening meal, at least come to the basic presentation at noon.

(we need to know how many are coming so we can prepare your meal)

In addition to cash or check, the giving kiosk is now prepared to receive payment for the Seder

(Visa, Mastercard, Discover).
